More than 2.75 lakh students are eligible to vote in the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections on Friday, September 18, with more than 600 police personnel deployed across the campus. Authorities will also use drones, CCTV cameras and body-worn cameras to monitor polling.
Polling will run in two shifts, from 8.30 AM to 1 PM and 3 PM to 7.30 PM. DUSU guidelines require officials to allow all students who arrive within these timings to vote.
Authorities will count the votes on September 19 and declare the results.
Delhi University Vice Chancellor Yogesh Singh directed colleges to strengthen security. More than 150 police officers will wear body cameras, while women police personnel will guard women’s colleges. Students will vote using electronic voting machines.
The presidential contest includes ABVP candidate Yash Dabas and NSUI candidate Vijay Shankar Meena.
The ABVP panel includes Ishu Maurya for vice-president, Riya Chhawdi for secretary and Lakshyaraj Singh for joint secretary. NSUI has fielded Veer Chhatrath for vice-president, Namrata Chaudhary for secretary and Gopal Chaudhary for joint secretary.
Other student organisations are also contesting the polls. The AAP-backed Association of Students for Alternative Politics (ASAP) has fielded Ashmit Kumar Panwar for president and Pankaj Kumar for secretary, while the Left-backed AISA has named Ananya as its presidential candidate.
The elections come amid renewed focus on student safety, accommodation and welfare following protests over examination irregularities and the Satya Niketan building collapse, which killed seven people, including five DU students. Student housing has consequently emerged as a key campaign issue.
First-year students without college identity cards can vote by producing a valid fee receipt and government-issued ID, including Aadhaar, PAN, Voter ID or a driving licence. Second- and third-year students must carry valid college identity cards.
