Delhi authorities intensified security measures on Friday after five locations in the national capital received bomb threats, just a day before the country celebrates its 80th Independence Day.
According to Delhi Fire Service officials, the threatened sites included Jamnagar House, Jhandewalan Flatted Factory Complex, the District Magistrate’s Office in Saket, Terminal 3 of Indira Gandhi International Airport and the SDM Office at Delhi Cantonment.
The Delhi Fire Service sent fire tenders to each location following the alerts.
Security teams carried out checks at the sites, but officials said they had not detected any suspicious object during the initial searches.
The latest threats followed another security alert received by the Delhi Mayor’s Office on August 3.
An email sent to the office had warned of several bomb blasts at the Red Fort on August 15, prompting the authorities to launch a detailed security operation around the landmark.
The Mayor’s Office promptly informed Delhi Police and other security agencies about the message.
Delhi Police also increased security around the monument and began investigating the origin of the threat.
A similar alert on July 11 had earlier led security agencies to conduct an extensive search of the Red Fort.
Authorities found no explosive material or suspicious object during that operation and subsequently determined that the threat was a hoax.
According to Delhi Police, the July alert came through a call to the Mumbai Police Control Room. The caller allegedly claimed that explosives would be used to target the historic monument.
Mumbai Police subsequently alerted their Delhi counterparts, following which North District Police personnel launched precautionary security measures.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the nation from the Red Fort on Saturday, August 15, during the Independence Day celebrations.
