Around 100 beneficiaries of the PM Vishwakarma scheme from Delhi-NCR have been invited as special guests to witness the 80th Independence Day celebrations at the Red Fort in New Delhi, according to an official statement issued on Friday.
The Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) said the beneficiaries will attend the national celebration along with their spouses or companions.
The special guests include women artisans involved in various traditional trades, highlighting the government’s focus on women’s economic empowerment, livelihood opportunities and the preservation of India’s traditional crafts and cultural heritage.
The invited artisans will receive souvenirs as a token of recognition and appreciation for their contribution.
Launched as one of the government’s flagship initiatives, the PM Vishwakarma scheme, however, provides comprehensive support to artisans and craftspeople engaged in traditional trades.
The programme offers skill development, modern toolkits, financial assistance, digital enablement and market linkages to strengthen livelihoods and promote the socio-economic empowerment of artisans.
According to the government, around 30 lakh traditional artisans and craftspeople have registered under the scheme.
The beneficiaries invited to the Independence Day celebrations represent all 18 traditional trades covered under PM Vishwakarma. These include tailors, carpenters, goldsmiths, blacksmiths and locksmiths, among others.
The beneficiaries received registration, skill training, toolkits and other support under the scheme. Their participation at the Red Fort recognises artisans’ contribution to India’s cultural heritage and reflects efforts to strengthen traditional livelihoods.
