Prime Minister Narendra Modi has stepped in to address the standoff involving activist Sonam Wangchuk, who has been on a hunger strike, along with protesting students demanding stronger action against examination paper leaks.
The intervention comes after weeks of escalating protests, with growing pressure on the government from civil society and Opposition parties.
The Prime Minister initiated direct discussions with Wangchuk and representatives of the protesting students, indicating the government’s willingness to engage with their concerns.
The discussions focused on improving transparency, accountability and fairness in public examinations and recruitment.
One of the key developments following these talks was the government’s decision to strengthen the legal framework against examination malpractice.
According to reports, the Union Cabinet on Friday approved a Bill proposing fast-track courts for paper leak cases and stricter punishment for those involved in examination fraud.
The government will likely introduce the legislation in Parliament next week.
The proposed measures are intended to ensure quicker disposal of cases, with the government aiming to restore public confidence in examination and recruitment systems that have faced repeated controversies.
In a video message, PM Modi also promised a tougher law to curb examination paper leaks and strengthen action against offenders.

The move follows concerns over the implementation of the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024.
While the law introduced stricter provisions against organised examination fraud, reports suggested that legal gaps allowed some accused individuals to obtain bail and continue unlawful activities.
The proposed amendments will likely tighten enforcement, enhance investigative powers and improve coordination across states.
Observers say the government’s outreach to Sonam Wangchuk reflects an effort to engage with public concerns while pursuing institutional reforms.
The effectiveness of the proposed measures will ultimately depend on their implementation once enacted.
