Australia added another chapter to their remarkable World Cup legacy by defeating England by seven wickets in the Women’s T20 World Cup final at Lord’s.
The latest success handed the defending champions a record seventh title and reinforced their long-standing dominance in the shortest format of the women’s game.
Australia began their pursuit of 151 cautiously before Beth Mooney and Phoebe Litchfield wrestled control with a superb century partnership.
Mooney compiled a polished 64 from 49 deliveries, while Litchfield narrowly missed a half-century after contributing a fluent 48 that kept England under constant pressure.
England struck early when Lauren Bell bowled Georgia Voll after a brisk start, but the breakthrough had little impact.
Litchfield settled immediately and combined brilliantly with Mooney to maintain a healthy scoring rate throughout the chase.
Charlotte Dean eventually ended the 100-run stand by dismissing Litchfield late in the innings. Nevertheless, Mooney continued to dictate proceedings before Sophie Ecclestone removed her leg before wicket following a successful review.
Ellyse Perry then guided Australia over the finish line with 17 deliveries to spare, by which time the team had all but secured victory.
After being invited to bat first, England slipped to an uneasy position before captain Nat Sciver-Brunt steadied the innings with an unbeaten 58.
Freya Kemp provided valuable support with an unbeaten 44 as the pair rebuilt the innings and carried the hosts to a competitive total of 150/4.
Australia’s bowlers maintained disciplined lines despite Sciver-Brunt’s resistance. Kim Garth, Lucy Hamilton, Annabel Sutherland and skipper Sophie Molineux each claimed a wicket to prevent England from posting a more imposing score.
Australia completed a clinical all-round performance to extend their unmatched record in the Women’s T20 World Cup.
