Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday expressed grief over the demise of legendary playback singer Suman Kalyanpur, remembering her melodious voice and immense contribution to Indian music and cinema.

PM Modi paid tribute to Kalyanpur, saying she enriched India’s cultural heritage with her soulful songs and held a special place in the hearts of music lovers. He also expressed condolences to her family and fans.

Born Suman Hemmadi (January 28, 1937), Kalyanpur was a celebrated playback singer who worked with legends like Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle. She recorded thousands of songs in multiple languages, including Hindi and Marathi, and gave timeless hits like Na Tum Hamein Jano and Na Na Karte Pyar.

Kalyanpur was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2023 for her contribution to Indian music. The honour acknowledged her lasting impact on the country’s cultural and musical heritage.

The veteran singer passed away at her Mumbai residence at the age of 89 due to age-related ailments, bringing to a close a remarkable musical journey that spanned more than seven decades.

Suman Kalyanpur’s timeless melodies continue to resonate with listeners across generations. Through her unforgettable songs and artistic excellence, she left an enduring imprint on Indian music and secured a legacy that will inspire artists and audiences for years to come.
