The Delhi Gymkhana Club, a 113-year-old institution located in the heart of the capital, is confronting an unprecedented crisis.
The Government of India has instructed the club to vacate its expansive premises by 5 June, citing concerns linked to defence infrastructure, national security, and public interest.
Once regarded as a symbol of influence and elite status, the club now finds itself at the centre of serious allegations.
Questions have emerged over how such a prestigious institution became associated with corruption, administrative irregularities, political patronage, and prolonged legal disputes.
Established in 1913 during British rule, the club initially barred Indian entry. Even after Independence, its stature remained intact, attracting industrialists, bureaucrats, politicians, and other influential figures.
Spread across more than 27 acres in central Delhi, it long represented exclusivity and privilege.
By 2020, multiple allegations of financial irregularities surfaced. These included suspected discrepancies in construction projects, manipulation of membership rules, and questionable financial decisions.
Concerns were also raised over the handling of funds during the pandemic and the awarding of contracts at inflated costs. As the situation escalated, the Ministry of Corporate Affairs approached the National Company Law Tribunal for intervention.
In February 2021, the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal dissolved the club’s managing committee and handed control to a government-appointed administrator.
Frequent leadership changes and resignations deepened the crisis, raising concerns about transparency and accountability.
Subsequent developments intensified scrutiny, including allegations of unauthorised construction and security risks near sensitive areas.
Disputes over governance, financial decisions, and compliance further complicated the situation, eventually drawing attention from multiple authorities.
The matter reached the Supreme Court of India, which directed the conduct of elections.
The Delhi High Court also raised serious concerns, even considering a potential probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation. Legal proceedings, including contempt-related issues, continue to remain unresolved.
The decision to shut down the club has sparked debate over whether security concerns drove the move or whether leaders acted to address mounting criticism.
Observers note that despite years of allegations, no decisive action ensured a thorough and impartial investigation.
Once a hallmark of prestige and influence, the Delhi Gymkhana Club now stands engulfed in controversy. Its possible closure raises critical questions about accountability, transparency, and whether the allegations surrounding it will ever be conclusively examined.
