India has advised citizens to avoid non-essential travel to Congo, Uganda and South Sudan following the Ebola outbreak linked to the Bundibugyo virus strain.

India Warns Against Non-Essential Travel To Ebola-Hit African Nations

The Indian government on Sunday advised citizens to avoid non-essential travel to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, and South Sudan following the reported outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease linked to the Bundibugyo virus strain.

The advisory comes after the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared the situation a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).

In its advisory, the Union Health Ministry urged Indian citizens currently residing in or travelling to the affected countries to strictly follow health and safety guidelines issued by local authorities and maintain heightened precautions.

The Ministry stated that India has not reported any case of Ebola Disease caused by the Bundibugyo virus strain so far.

Authorities continue to closely monitor the evolving health situation in Africa in line with international recommendations.

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has also declared the outbreak affecting the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda as a Public Health Emergency of Continental Security.

On May 22, the WHO Emergency Committee urged countries to strengthen surveillance at international entry points and monitor travellers arriving from Ebola-affected regions.

The organisation also advised against travel to affected areas.

Health authorities warned that neighbouring countries, including South Sudan, remain at high risk of transmission.

Ebola caused by the Bundibugyo strain is a severe viral disease with a high mortality rate, and no approved vaccine or specific treatment currently exists.
