Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) president Ajinkya Naik met Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to push forward plans for a world-class cricket stadium in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
The proposal envisions the venue, with a seating capacity of 1,00,000, as one of the largest cricket stadiums globally.
The project aims to deliver state-of-the-art infrastructure, enhanced fan experience, and integrated urban development.
The initiative pursues strengthening sports infrastructure in the state under the leadership of the Chief Minister.
Talks with CIDCO
Naik also held detailed discussions with CIDCO Managing Director Vijay Singhal to outline a roadmap for the ambitious project. This initiative marks a defining moment for Maharashtra’s sporting ecosystem.
A 1-lakh-capacity stadium in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region will not only elevate Mumbai cricket but also firmly position Maharashtra on the global sporting map.
“This world-class infrastructure will create unparalleled opportunities for player development, provide critical exposure to emerging talent, and strengthen the cricketing ecosystem across all levels,” Naik said.
The proposed stadium will likely play a key role in boosting sports tourism, attracting major international events, and enhancing Maharashtra’s global sporting footprint. It aligns with the state’s broader vision of promoting sports-led development and nurturing grassroots talent.
The project also builds on a 2025 assurance by the Chief Minister to allocate land for a new stadium.
“Last year, (Amol) Kale (late MCA president) and Ajinkya Naik (MCA president) had come to me with a request that the MCA needed to build one more stadium of a minimum 1,00,000-crowd capacity. I’m assuring Ajinkya that if you come with a proposal, the Maharashtra govt will give you an appropriate, good piece of land for MCA to build its own big stadium which can seat 1,00,000 spectators,” he had said at an event where stands at Wankhede Stadium were named after Rohit Sharma, Ajit Wadekar, and Sharad Pawar.
