Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday expressed his gratitude to the people and Government of Ethiopia for awarding him the country’s highest civilian honour, the ‘Great Honour Nishan of Ethiopia’.
Taking to the social media platform X, PM Modi described the accolade as a matter of immense pride, saying it symbolises the contributions of countless Indians who have strengthened India-Ethiopia relations over the years.
He also thanked Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali for the gesture, emphasising India’s commitment to further deepen cooperation and explore new opportunities.
“To be honoured by one of the world’s most ancient and rich civilisations is a matter of immense pride. This honour belongs to the countless Indians who have shaped and strengthened our partnership over the years.” PM Modi stated.

Key Outcomes of the Ethiopia Visit
PM Modi highlighted the outcomes of his visit by sharing details provided by MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal. The outcomes included elevating bilateral ties with Ethiopia to a ‘Strategic Partnership’. They also encompassed agreements on cooperation in customs administration.
The two countries also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to establish a data centre at Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Other initiatives include an implementing arrangement for training in United Nations peacekeeping operations, an MoU on debt restructuring under the G20 Common Framework, and a doubling of scholarships for Ethiopian students under the ICCR programme.
India will also offer specialised short-term courses in Artificial Intelligence under the ITEC programme and assist in strengthening maternal and neonatal care at the Mahatma Gandhi Hospital in Addis Ababa.
PM Modi highlighted that the partnership prioritises knowledge, skills, and innovation, aiming to empower youth and promote inclusive growth.
Cooperation in healthcare reflects a shared commitment to human dignity and support for the most vulnerable, showcasing a people-centric approach to development.
Following Ethiopia, PM Modi will visit Oman on Wednesday at the invitation of Sultan Haitham bin Tariq, marking the final leg of his three-nation tour, which also included Jordan and Ethiopia.
The visit coincides with the 70th anniversary of India-Oman diplomatic relations and underlines the growing strategic partnership between New Delhi and Muscat.
The Prime Minister’s engagements reflect India’s continued focus on strengthening diplomatic, strategic, and developmental ties with key partners across the Global South.
