Prime Minister Narendra Modi met a group of Indian-origin tech entrepreneurs in Johannesburg during his three-day visit to South Africa for the G20 Leaders’ Summit.

The interaction underscored India’s growing global influence in the technology sector and the pivotal role of the Indian diaspora in driving innovation worldwide.

During the meeting, PM Modi called on tech leaders to deepen their engagement with India and collaborate on emerging technologies to support digital growth.

In a post on X, he wrote that the entrepreneurs shared insights on their work in FinTech, social media platforms, agriculture, education, healthcare, and medical devices. He encouraged them to work closely with India and explore opportunities for mutual growth.

Insights from Entrepreneurs

Several participants expressed enthusiasm about their discussion with PM Modi.

A healthcare tech entrepreneur highlighted their digital platform that connects patients with healthcare professionals, facilitates telehealth services, manages online bookings, and enables medication delivery.

They noted that their platform supports much of the private healthcare sector in South Africa and neighbouring regions.

Another entrepreneur described PM Modi’s interest in India’s global leadership in digital payments, particularly UPI, calling it the world’s largest digital payments ecosystem.

They added that the Prime Minister asked how their initiatives could benefit Indians and enhance tourism.

A tech innovator working in agriculture said they discussed education, food security, carbon footprints, and the development of quantum-based agricultural solutions.

The conversation focused on how India and South Africa are scaling agricultural growth through technology.

Another entrepreneur spoke about their ongoing projects in media, technology, agriculture, and education, noting that the meeting provided an opportunity to strengthen business relationships.

Reflecting on the interaction, several participants praised PM Modi’s deep understanding of technological trends.

One entrepreneur remarked that the detailed discussions exceeded expectations, while another said the Prime Minister’s vast knowledge enabled a meaningful exchange on modern digital solutions.

Cultural Welcome and G20 Summit

Upon arrival in Johannesburg, PM Modi was greeted by a vibrant cultural programme titled ‘Rhythms of a United India’, featuring folk performances from 11 Indian states.

He expressed gratitude for the warm welcome from the Indian community.

The G20 Leaders’ Summit, scheduled for 22–23 November, will see PM Modi engage in several bilateral meetings with global leaders on the sidelines, further strengthening India’s international partnerships.
