Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensure ‘Ease of Justice,’ calling it essential for achieving ‘Ease of Doing Business’ and ‘Ease of Living.’
He inaugurated the National Conference on ‘Strengthening Legal Aid Delivery Mechanisms’ at the Supreme Court in New Delhi.
Addressing the gathering, he said the legal aid system, supported by the government, helped resolve eight lakh cases through Lok Adalats and pre-litigation stages in the past three years.
PM Modi urged greater legal awareness among citizens and wider use of technology in the justice system.
He said the language of justice must be simple and understandable to everyone. “When justice becomes easy to understand, litigation will reduce,” he added.
Focus on Legal Aid & Accessibility
The Prime Minister emphasised that justice must be accessible and delivered without delay. “Justice should reach everyone, regardless of their social or economic background. This alone strengthens the foundation of social justice,” he said.
Chief Justice of India BR Gavai described legal aid as an act of nation-building. “An act of legal aid is an act of nation-building,” he said, adding that the movement reflects Dr BR Ambedkar’s dream of empowering the unheard.
Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal called on the youth to view justice delivery as a citizen-centric service.
He said the Ministry of Law and Justice, under the Prime Minister’s guidance, is using digital platforms to expand access to justice.
He also highlighted that Article 39A of the Constitution ensures free legal aid, reflecting the vision of India’s founding leaders.
Meghwal praised the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) for providing legal assistance to millions over three decades.
During the event, PM Modi launched NALSA’s new Community Mediation Training Module.
The two-day conference, organised by NALSA, will discuss key issues like legal aid counselling, panel lawyers, paralegal volunteers, permanent Lok Adalats, and the financial management of legal service institutions.
Established under the Legal Services Authorities Act of 1987, NALSA continues to ensure equal access to justice for all citizens across India.
