Addressing gatherings in Noida and Lucknow, Rajya Sabha MP Dr Dinesh Sharma said that the simplification of GST has brought joy and relief to citizens during the festive season.
He remarked that ‘a savings festival’ is underway across the country, reflecting the strength of India’s reformed economy.
He urged citizens to embrace Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Swadeshi (self-reliance) campaign and noted that simplified taxation has increased market demand, which in turn has boosted production.
“This is a sign that India’s economy is moving towards new heights and self-reliance,” he said, adding that a developed India can only emerge from the mantra of Atmanirbharta (self-sufficiency).
From Dependency to Self-Reliance
Dr Sharma highlighted that India’s transformation from a feudal and family-based system to a modern, market-driven society has led to sweeping socio-economic changes.
He recalled that ancient India was once called the ‘golden bird’ due to its prosperity, but suffered greatly under foreign invasions and colonial exploitation.
He criticised the post-independence Congress governments for creating dependency and scarcity, pointing out that citizens once had to eat poor-quality imported wheat.
“Under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, every citizen is now receiving 10 kilograms of free ration each month. India is regaining its position as a donor nation rather than a dependent one,” he asserted.
Dr Sharma reminded that during the COVID-19 pandemic, India not only protected its citizens with Made-in-India vaccines but also shared them globally, symbolising the nation’s humanitarian leadership.
He further emphasised that per capita income has seen a remarkable rise — from approximately ₹46,000 in 2014 to ₹1,14,000 today — reflecting India’s economic resurgence.
Taking a sharp dig at the opposition, Dr Sharma said that they criticise the government in one voice only because it is performing well.
“Their political ground is slipping,” he said. “Ironically, many opposition leaders echo the views of foreign powers while questioning the Prime Minister’s foreign visits, even as they hide details of their own international trips.”
He remarked that Prime Minister Modi gave a strategic response to global tariff pressures from the United States through GST simplification, ensuring that India’s domestic market remains strong and competitive.
He stated that developed nations feel unsettled by India’s rapid ascent to the position of the world’s fourth-largest economy.
India’s Self-Reliant Defence and Disciplined Growth
Dr Sharma criticised the previous UPA government for succumbing to foreign pressure, recalling that even during the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, India refrained from strong retaliation due to diplomatic constraints.
“At that time, the response to bullets was sending pigeons of peace. Today, under Modi’s leadership, the reply is given by entering the enemy’s territory,” he said.
He emphasised that modern India is no longer a pleading nation but a giver nation, becoming self-reliant even in defence production.
“For India to progress further, there must be a flow of love and unity. If stones rain from rooftops, the police will have to act. This is a new India where discipline is essential,” he added.
