In a historic development for Bihar’s capital, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar will inaugurate the city’s first metro service on Monday, marking the beginning of a new era in Patna’s public transportation system.
The inaugural stretch, spanning 4.5 kilometres from Patliputra Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT) to Bhootnath via Zero Mile, is part of the Red Line corridor and represents the first operational section of the Patna Metro project.
The launch will mark a significant milestone in Bihar’s infrastructure growth, offering residents a modern, eco-friendly, and efficient commuting option.
Alongside the inauguration, the Chief Minister will also lay the foundation stone for a 9.35 km underground corridor linking Patna Junction to Rukunpura, aimed at expanding the city’s metro network and improving connectivity across key urban zones.
The Patna Metro Rail Corporation Limited (PMRCL), in collaboration with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), has undertaken the project, ensuring adherence to safety and operational standards.
The Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) recently granted approval following successful trial runs, paving the way for the launch.
Trial Runs and Safety Checks
Ahead of the inauguration, extensive trials were carried out to ensure operational readiness.
The first test featured a three-coach train on an 800-metre track within the depot to evaluate technical and safety systems.
Officials later conducted extended trials on the full stretch, focusing on speed, braking performance, and power supply.
Each metro train, comprising three coaches, can accommodate around 900 passengers per trip, ensuring comfortable and efficient travel during peak hours.
The metro’s design showcases Bihar’s cultural richness, with Madhubani artwork and illustrations of iconic landmarks such as the Golghar, Mahabodhi Temple, Buddha Stupa, and Nalanda ruins.
The blend of traditional art with modern infrastructure reflects the state’s unique identity.
Once operational, the Patna Metro will provide a zero-emission, high-capacity transport solution designed to decongest city roads and reduce pollution.
The Red Line will connect major locations, including ISBT, Zero Mile, Khemni Chak, and Bhootnath Road, transforming the daily commute for thousands of residents.
This launch marks a crucial step toward sustainable urban development, improved connectivity, and economic progress in Bihar’s capital.
