Union Home Minister Amit Shah, addressing artisans at the Khadi Mahotsav on the Maharshi Dayanand University campus in Rohtak, said that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, India is progressing steadily towards becoming a developed nation.
He added that by 2047, the centenary of India’s independence, the country will achieve global leadership.
He emphasised that khadi and village industries will play a pivotal role in this journey.
“Khadi and village industries are becoming a powerful platform for millions of weavers,” he said, highlighting their contribution to self-reliance and economic growth.
During the event, HM Shah, alongside Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, distributed modern machines, toolkits, and margin money worth ₹301 crore under the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP).
These initiatives aim to encourage artisans to embrace self-reliance through the Swadeshi movement.
The Minister also virtually inaugurated PMEGP units, a central wool processing plant, and newly constructed KVIC offices and warehouses in Panchkula, enhancing infrastructure for khadi and village industries.
Growth of Khadi Industry
Amit Shah noted that previous governments neglected khadi and village industries.
Under PM Modi’s leadership, he said, khadi turnover has increased dramatically from ₹33,000 crore to ₹1.70 lakh crore in just 11 years, with the benefits reaching the weavers rather than private industrialists.
KVIC has also modernised packaging and marketing systems to expand the reach of khadi products. The Minister distributed twelve types of modern machines, including automatic charkhas and leather equipment, alongside margin money for artisans.
Shah underscored the importance of Swadeshi and Swabhasha for completing the vision of Swaraj envisioned at independence.
He credited PM Modi with inspiring 140 crore Indians to adopt indigenous products, linking the initiative with Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India).
He also highlighted recent GST reductions on over 395 items, calling it a “Diwali gift” for the nation, and encouraged the public to adopt khadi not only for economic purposes but also as a fashion statement.
Chief Minister Saini welcomed Shah’s remarks, noting that khadi is gaining international recognition and moving from a local heritage product to a global brand. He said Khadi and village industries have become strong pillars for self-reliance in India, celebrating the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat under PM Modi.
Through these initiatives, khadi is positioned as both a cultural heritage and an economic driver, empowering artisans, promoting indigenous products, and contributing to India’s long-term goal of global leadership by 2047.
