Prolonged Sitting Can Shrink Your Lungs; Warns Expert

We’ve all heard that sitting for long hours can cause weight gain, backaches and lifestyle diseases. But here’s something that may shock you: Prolonged sitting can actually reduce your lung capacity.

Dr Rajkumar K, senior consultant in pulmonology at MGM Malar Hospital, Chennai, explained how desk jobs and sedentary routines silently harm our lungs.

Why Sitting Hurts Your Lungs

  • Weak breathing muscles: Sitting for too long makes you slouch, which stops your chest and diaphragm from moving properly, weakening them over time.
  • Less oxygen: Weak muscles mean your lungs don’t fully expand, so your body gets less oxygen and you end up taking shallow breaths.
  • Higher chance of infections: When lungs can’t expand well, mucus stays trapped, making it easier to catch infections like pneumonia.
  • Risk of COPD: Staying low on oxygen for a long time can lead to Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), making it hard to breathe.

What the Studies Say

Dr Rajkumar pointed to a 2014 study in The European Respiratory Journal:

  1. Sedentary individuals had ’12–15% lower lung function’ compared to active people.
  2. The findings held regardless of age, weight or smoking history.

If we spend most of our day sitting, we might notice that we get tired easily and can’t catch our breath. Your heart also works harder.

How to Protect Your Lungs

The good news? These harmful effects are preventable with small changes. Dr Rajkumar suggested:

  1. Stretch every 30 minutes at work to release tension.
  2. Do breathing exercises to strengthen respiratory muscles.
  3. Exercise at least 30 minutes daily; brisk walking, swimming, or yoga all help improve posture and lung capacity.

“Simple steps can reverse the damage of sitting. Staying active ensures stronger lungs, better posture, and improved overall health,” he advised.

Sitting too long? Take breaks to stretch or walk; it not only eases your back but also supports your lungs.
