First-Of-Its-Kind Rail-Based Missile Launch Boosts India’s Strategic Edge, Says Rajnath Singh

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday announced India’s successful test of the Agni-Prime missile from a rail-mounted launcher.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday declared that India has successfully conducted the test launch of the Intermediate Range Agni-Prime missile from a rail-mounted mobile launcher.

The missile, capable of striking targets up to 2,000 kilometres away, comes with a number of advanced technologies.

With this achievement, India now joins the small group of countries that possess the know-how to deploy canisterised missile systems from rail networks while on the move.

The trial is, however, a significant step in advancing the country’s defence self-reliance, aligning with the Prime Minister’s vision of ‘Aatmanirbharta’ across key sectors.

In a post on his social media platform, the Defence Minister congratulated the nation, saluting the work of scientists at the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the Strategic Forces Command (SFC), and the armed forces for their role in the successful launch.

Taking to X, Rajnath Singh posted, “India has carried out the successful launch of Intermediate Range Agni-Prime Missile from a Rail based Mobile launcher system. This next generation missile is designed to cover a range up to 2000 km and is equipped with various advanced features.”

“The first-of-its-kind launch carried out from specially designed Rail based Mobile Launcher, has the capability to move on Rail network without any pre-conditions that allows User to have a cross country mobility and launch within a short reaction time with reduced visibility,” he added.

The post further read, “Congratulations to @DRDO_India, Strategic Forces Command (SFC) and the Armed Forces on successful test of Intermediate Range Agni-Prime missile. This successful flight test has put India in the group of select nations having capabilities that have developed canisterised launch system from on the move rail network.”
