Over 7 Crore Returns Already Filed
Earlier that same day, the Department confirmed that taxpayers had already filed more than seven crore ITRs for AY 2025–26 as the earlier deadline approached.
In a message shared on X, the Department expressed gratitude to both taxpayers and professionals for their role in achieving this milestone while urging remaining filers to complete their returns promptly.
“More than 7 crore ITRs have been filed so far and still counting (15th September) ! We extend our gratitude to taxpayers and tax professionals for helping us reach this milestone, and urge all those who haven’t filed ITR for AY 2025-26, to file their ITR,” it posted.
The Department assured users that support continues to be available around the clock.
“To assist taxpayers for ITR filing, tax payment and other related services, our helpdesk is functioning on a 24×7 basis, and we are providing support through calls, live chats, WebEx sessions & Twitter/X,” the post added.

The clarification came soon after the Department addressed misinformation about a possible extension to 30 September.
On Sunday, it dismissed circulating reports as ‘fake news’, reiterating that 15 September was the final deadline at that time.
A fake news is in circulation stating that the due of filing ITRs (originally due on 31.07.2025, and extended to 15.09.2025) has been further extended to 30.09.2025.

Back in May, the government had already granted additional time by moving the due date for non-audit cases from 31 July to 15 September for AY 2025–26.
Officials added that the surge in return filings demonstrates stronger tax compliance and a widening taxpayer base across the country.
