Prime Minister Narendra Modi held bilateral talks with Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam of Mauritius in Varanasi on Thursday, further strengthening the deep-rooted ties between the two nations.
Ramgoolam is currently on an eight-day official visit to India, with Varanasi serving as a symbolic backdrop for the meeting, underscoring the civilisational and spiritual connections between the two countries.
During the discussions, both leaders reviewed the entire spectrum of bilateral cooperation under the framework of the Enhanced Strategic Partnership, first formalised during PM Modi’s state visit to Mauritius in March.
The partnership reflects the countries’ shared heritage, people-to-people ties, and mutual aspirations for sustainable development and regional security.
They focused on expanding collaboration in priority areas such as healthcare, education, digital public infrastructure, science and technology, and the blue economy.
Renewable energy and capacity building also featured prominently in the talks, reflecting both countries’ commitment to climate resilience and inclusive growth.
Civilisational and Cultural Linkages in Focus
The choice of Varanasi—a city of spiritual and cultural significance—was especially poignant.
The meeting highlighted the longstanding civilisational links and cultural affinity between India and Mauritius, where a significant portion of the population traces its roots to India.
These ties continue to shape the close partnership that spans across governments, institutions, and communities.
Earlier in the day, Ramgoolam met with Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), they discussed the multifaceted nature of the relationship and reaffirmed their shared commitment to furthering cooperation in key sectors.

A Regional and Global Partnership
As a key maritime neighbour in the Indian Ocean Region, Mauritius plays an essential role in supporting India’s MAHASAGAR vision (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Region) and the ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy.
The partnership also contributes to broader Global South cooperation, addressing shared challenges and promoting inclusive development.
This visit marks a significant chapter in India-Mauritius relations. The Varanasi summit is expected to open new avenues of strategic collaboration while deepening mutual trust.
Speaking earlier at a business conclave in Maharashtra, Ramgoolam reaffirmed Mauritius’ unwavering support, stating, “The India-Mauritius partnership will last forever.”
Mauritius remains one of India’s earliest diplomatic partners post-independence, and this visit reaffirms a timeless relationship based on shared values, strategic interests, and common destiny.
