Prime Minister Narendra Modi has termed the new GST 2.0 reforms as part of a decade-long economic transformation that has reshaped India’s financial landscape.
Interacting with citizens and industry professionals on social media platform X, PM Modi said that these reforms build on earlier steps like corporate tax cuts, personal income tax reliefs, and the original rollout of GST, which created a unified national market.

He noted that the latest reforms are designed to make the tax system ‘simpler, fairer and more growth-oriented’, reinforcing the vision of a Viksit Bharat.
The shift to a two-tier GST rate structure of 5% and 18% has simplified tax compliance and reduced ambiguity.
Focus on Health, Affordability and Nutrition
In a series of posts, PM Modi emphasised that the revised GST rates reflect the government’s commitment to a Swasth Bharat.
By reducing GST on essential food items, cooking essentials, and protein-rich products, the government aims to make daily life more affordable for millions.
The highest slab remains applicable to luxury and unhealthy goods such as tobacco and aerated drinks.
These changes, he said, work alongside existing health initiatives like Ayushman Bharat and POSHAN Abhiyaan to improve the overall quality of life.
Responding to a post by Amul Cooperative, PM Modi praised the contribution of Annadatas (farmers) in ensuring nutritional and rural economic security.
He stated that GST 2.0 reforms would empower dairy farmers, encourage value addition, and make dairy products more accessible.
He also reaffirmed the government’s ongoing efforts through schemes like the Rashtriya Gokul Mission and cooperative sector reforms.
Calling GST 2.0 a ‘game-changer for manufacturers’, PM Modi said the reforms will lower input costs and improve digital compliance, encouraging demand for ‘Made in India’ products.
He also reiterated the government’s support for MSMEs—highlighting easier credit access, market expansion, and simpler tax systems as key benefits.
PM Modi noted that the reforms will reduce the cost of appliances like TVs and ACs, as well as daily essentials.
He affirmed the government’s commitment to enhancing the ease of living for India’s middle class, calling them ‘the heart of our growth journey’.
Better Healthcare and Insurance Access
Highlighting reduced GST on life-saving medicines and essential health products, PM Modi said the reforms support India’s mission of ‘Insurance for All by 2047’.
He added that affordable healthcare remains central to his vision of a Swasth and Samarth Bharat (Healthy and Empowered India).
With these reforms, the government aims to strengthen the economy, empower citizens, and create a fairer, more inclusive tax system.
As PM Modi concluded, “Together, we move towards a stronger and more prosperous India.”
