Abusive slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his late mother during the ‘Voter Adhikar Yatra’ in Darbhanga, Bihar, prompted Union Home Minister Amit Shah to launch a scathing attack on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and the Mahagathbandhan alliance.

Speaking at an event in Assam on Friday, Shah accused the Congress of enabling ‘politics of hatred’ and described the Bihar incident as an example of political life ‘stooping to absurd levels’.

He demanded an apology from Rahul Gandhi, saying the episode had crossed all boundaries of decency.

“The simple and dignified life of Prime Minister Modi’s mother, who embodied the values of an ideal Indian mother, was insulted most shamefully. The country will not tolerate such a despicable act,” Shah said.

He added that targeting a mother, even for political rivalry, marked ‘a new low in public discourse’.

Shah further condemned the act as ‘offensive and regressive’, stating that it represented the worst decline in political culture.

“If you have any shame left, you must apologise to the Prime Minister and to the nation,” he said in a sharp message directed at the Rae Bareli MP.

Darbhanga Rally Triggers Nationwide Row

The controversy erupted after a video went viral from the Mahagathbandhan’s yatra in Bihar, showing a man hurling expletives at the Prime Minister and his late mother from the stage.

Political leaders across party lines immediately condemned the footage, although the speaker made the remarks in the absence of Rahul Gandhi and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav.

The Bihar Police later arrested the accused, identified as Rafiq alias Raja. However, the BJP has maintained its criticism, arguing that responsibility rests with the Congress leadership for allowing such behaviour on their stage.

The row has become the latest flashpoint between the BJP and Congress.

The ruling party insists that Rahul Gandhi must issue a public apology, while Congress dismisses the demand as a diversionary tactic and points out that the offender is already in custody.

With both sides refusing to back down, the episode has added further tension to the already heated political atmosphere ahead of the upcoming elections.
