Bihar Police Headquarters issued a state-wide alert on Thursday after receiving intelligence indicating that operatives from Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) may have entered the state via the Nepal border.
A senior police official stated that three alleged terrorists, Hasnain Ali (Rawalpindi), Adil Hussain (Umerkot) and Mohammad Usman (Bahawalpur), reportedly reached Kathmandu in mid-August and are believed to have crossed into Bihar last week.
In response to the intelligence, authorities have circulated the suspects’ passport information across several border districts. These districts include Madhubani, Sitamarhi, Supaul, Araria, East Champaran, West Champaran and Kishanganj.
Additionally, they have instructed security agencies and district intelligence units to enhance surveillance, verify identities, and take action if they observe any suspicious activity.
Officials have not disclosed the precise border crossing used by the suspects, but have advised heightened vigilance along the entire frontier.
The India-Nepal border continues to pose challenges due to its porous nature and visa-free movement permitted under the bilateral treaty, complicating infiltration control.
Focus on Seemanchal Region
Security forces have intensified measures in the Muslim-majority Seemanchal region.
Patrolling and monitoring have been intensified, with district intelligence units tasked to keep track of unusual movements and intervene when necessary.
This comes after heightened border security measures implemented in May under Operation Sindoor.
With the Assembly elections approaching later this year, intelligence agencies warn that such infiltration could threaten key political figures and election-related events.
The alert coincides with recent counter-terror operations in Bihar.
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) and state police had previously dismantled several modules of the Popular Front of India (PFI) in districts such as Phulwari Sharif, Patna, reportedly engaged in anti-national activities.
The suspected entry of JeM operatives has raised concerns over the potential establishment of a broader terror network in the state.
In light of these developments, the Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS), Special Task Force (STF) and district police units have stepped up their alert levels.
