Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday launched a sharp attack on the Election Commission of India (ECI), accusing it of bias and collusion with the BJP during the electoral roll revision in Bihar.
Addressing the media in Purnia after leading the Voter Adhikar Yatra, he said the poll panel must listen to people’s concerns and end its ‘partnership’ with the ruling party.
Gandhi claimed that the march had revealed widespread public anger, with even children chanting ‘Vote Chor, Kursi Chod’ — a slogan alleging manipulation of the voter list.
“This issue has politically activated every child in Bihar. The Election Commission should take note of this phenomenon,” Gandhi remarked.
Rahul Gandhi Disputes ECI’s Claims
Gandhi said his team met several people whose names were wrongly deleted and rejected the ECI’s claim of removing only deceased or migrated voters.
“Names of people who voted five or six times in the past have been struck off. We don’t know what the ECI is claiming,” he said, stressing that wrongful deletions undermine democracy.
Gandhi thanked supporters for backing the yatra.
“For the past few days, you have put in your full strength, supported us, and together we are protecting the Constitution, the right to vote, and our future,” he told the gathering.
When asked about his party’s plan for farmers, Gandhi said the Congress manifesto would include debt relief, protection for Bihar’s farmers, and reforms in export-import policies.
Silence on CM Face, Focus on Unity
Gandhi avoided naming Tejashwi Yadav as CM candidate but stressed the alliance’s strength.
“We have formed a wonderful partnership. All parties are working closely with mutual respect. We expect good results. But our immediate priority is to stop vote theft,” he said.
The Mahagathbandhan launched a 16-day, 1,300 km Voter Adhikar Yatra across 20 districts to oppose the electoral roll revision.
The opposition alleges that the revision has led to large-scale voter disenfranchisement. The march will conclude in Patna on September 1. This comes ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections, where over seven crore voters will elect 243 legislators.
