Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate three new metro services in Kolkata on Friday, alongside other major infrastructure projects worth over ₹5,200 crore.
The projects are expected to significantly enhance connectivity across the city, including faster access to the airport and IT hub areas.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, PM Modi will visit Jessore Road Metro Station, where he will flag off the Noapara Jai Hind Bimanbandar metro service.
He will also launch, via video conferencing, the Sealdah Esplanade and Beleghata Hemanta Mukhopadhyay metro routes.
The Noapara Jai Hind Bimanbandar service will improve airport accessibility. The Sealdah Esplanade line will cut travel time from nearly 40 minutes to just 11 minutes.
The Beleghata Hemanta Mukhopadhyay section will strengthen links to the IT hub, easing daily commutes for thousands of professionals.
The Prime Minister will also ride the metro from Jessore Road to Jai Hind Bimanbandar and back. This will mark his second metro journey in Kolkata. He had earlier inaugurated India’s first underwater metro under the Hooghly in March 2024.
Wider infrastructure push
At the public event, PM Modi will inaugurate the new metro stretches and a subway at Howrah Metro Station.
PM will also lay the foundation stone of the 7.2-km-long, six-lane elevated Kona Expressway, a ₹1,200 crore project aimed at boosting connectivity between Howrah, nearby rural areas, and Kolkata.
Officials said the Kona Expressway will cut travel time substantially. They added that it will also provide a major boost to trade, tourism, and commerce in the region.
Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “It is always a delight to be among the people of Kolkata, a city whose development we are greatly committed to. Tomorrow’s programmes in the city are mainly focussed on connectivity. The metro services, which will be flagged off, include Noapara–Jai Hind Bimanbandar, Sealdah–Esplanade and Beleghata–Hemanta Mukhopadhyay routes. Connectivity to and from the airport as well as the IT hub areas will be enhanced.”

He said the projects are focused on improving connectivity, adding, “I am eager to be among @BJP4Bengal Karyakartas at a rally in Kolkata. With each passing day, public anger against the TMC is increasing. West Bengal is eagerly looking towards the BJP with hope because of our development agenda.”

He also claimed that public dissatisfaction with the Trinamool Congress government was rising. He expressed eagerness to meet BJP workers at a rally in the city.
Railway officials said the metro expansion will reduce congestion, shorten travel times, and connect some of Kolkata’s busiest areas. These projects will serve lakhs of passengers daily and cement Kolkata’s status as a growing hub of modern urban transport.
