Parsi New Year, or Navroz, is traditionally a celebration of spring and renewal. The term comes from Persian, with ‘Nav’ meaning new and ‘Roz’ meaning day.
While globally it coincides with the March equinox, Indian Parsis follow the Shahenshahi calendar, observing the festival in July or August.
The festival traces its roots to Prophet Zarathustra, the founder of Zoroastrianism, one of the earliest monotheistic religions.
Originating in ancient Persia (modern-day Iran), the faith flourished before the rise of Islam in the seventh century.
In India today, Navroz is celebrated with devotion, reflecting values of unity, renewal, and cultural heritage. The festival also serves as a reminder of the Parsi community’s remarkable contributions to the country.
