Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday urged the country’s tech firms to prioritise India’s needs instead of focusing mainly on developing software and products for other countries.
He addressed a gathering at the IIIT Auditorium in Electronics City after laying the foundation stone for the Metro Phase 3 project.
“Considering the present scenario, our next priority should be Tech Aatmanirbhar Bharat,” he said. “Indian tech companies have built software and products for the world. The time has come to give greater priority to India. We must move forward in manufacturing new products. Today, software and apps are used in every domain, and India should aim to be at the top.”
Call for Innovation and Quality Standards
The Prime Minister urged Bengaluru and Karnataka to strengthen their manufacturing presence in the ‘Make in India’ sector. He appealed for products to meet ‘zero defects, zero effect’ standards — meaning no defects and no environmental harm during production.
“I am confident that Karnataka’s talent will lead the vision of an Aatmanirbhar Bharat,” he said.
PM Modi cited economic growth as a key driver of progress. “Before 2014, India’s total exports were worth $480 billion. Today, they have reached $850 billion. Earlier, we used to import mobile phones, but now we are among the top five exporters. Bengaluru plays an important role in this,” he said.
He noted that electronic exports have grown from $6 billion to $38 billion since 2014, while automobile exports have doubled to $32 billion, making India the fourth-largest exporter of automobiles.
Digital India Driving Transformation
The Prime Minister said New India’s journey is intertwined with Digital India. He highlighted India’s progress towards global AI leadership, advances in semiconductor manufacturing, and achievements in low-cost space missions.
“India will soon have its own ‘Made in India’ chip,” he said.
He pointed out that digitalisation has reached even villages.
“Through UPI, more than 50 per cent of the world’s real-time transactions take place in India. Technology is bridging the gap between people and the government. About 2,200 government services are now on mobile phones through the Umang app,” he said.
PM Modi added that India is investing in AI-powered theft detection to ensure the benefits of the digital revolution reach the last person in society. “Bengaluru is playing an active role in this effort,” he said.
