Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday took a subtle dig at US President Donald Trump for imposing steep tariffs on Indian exports, remarking that some people were upset over India’s rapid growth and considered themselves above everyone, stating, “Sab ke boss hum hain.”

‘Jealous of India’s Growth’

Speaking at an event in Madhya Pradesh, Singh said efforts were underway to make Indian-made products more expensive, reducing their competitiveness in the global market.

“There are some people who are jealous of India’s rapid development. They think, ‘we are the boss of all.’ They cannot accept how quickly India is moving ahead,” he said.

The Minister warned that if Indian goods became costlier than those made abroad, international buyers would stop purchasing them.

Trade Tensions Escalate

Singh’s remarks came amid ongoing trade tensions between India and the US.

Trump imposed a 25% tariff on Indian exports ahead of the 1 August deadline to finalise a new trade deal.

Later, in a Truth Social post, he announced an additional 25% tariff and penalties, accusing India of funding Russia’s war in Ukraine through oil imports.

India condemned the move as ‘unjustified and unfair’, accusing the US of double standards. New Delhi pointed to the European Union’s larger oil and gas imports from Moscow and highlighted America’s own trade with Russia, including $2 billion worth of rare earth mineral purchases in the last three years.
