The Lok Sabha was adjourned till 2 PM on Monday after sustained protests from Opposition members, who demanded a debate on the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar.
The session began on a solemn note with obituary references but quickly spiralled into disruption, compelling Speaker Om Birla to suspend the proceedings.
Speaker Birla opened the session by paying tribute to three late parliamentarians:
- Shibu Soren,
- Tilak Dhari Prasad Singh (Kodarma, Jharkhand), and
- Ramrati Bind (Mirzapur)
He honoured their contributions to public life.
However, the proceedings soon turned turbulent as Opposition MPs stormed the Well of the House. They chanted ‘We want justice’ and held placards.
Ministers Questioned During Parliamentary Chaos
During Question Hour, MPs Madhavneni Raghunandan Rao (Medak, Telangana) and Shankar Lalwani (Indore, Madhya Pradesh) directed questions to Minister of State for Home Affairs, Nityanand Rai.
Meanwhile, a query about the Direct Benefit Transfer scheme prompted Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan to respond.
Chouhan criticised the Opposition’s actions, claiming their disruption was a deliberate attempt to silence discussion on welfare schemes.
“This is nothing short of murdering democracy,” he said, insisting that the scheme was designed to uplift farmers and the underprivileged.
Despite repeated efforts by Speaker Birla to restore order, the commotion continued.
“You are degrading the dignity of this House. I appeal again, please return to your seats,” he said, visibly dismayed.
Birla accused the Opposition of orchestrating a ‘planned disruption’ and adjourned the House till 2 PM.
BJP MP Bhola Singh (Bulandshahr) also urged for calm, but his calls were drowned out in the noise.
Since July 21, the Monsoon Session has been marred by repeated adjournments. There has been minimal legislative progress, except for debates on Operation Sindoor.
Several key bills, including the National Sports Governance Bill and the National Anti-Doping (Amendment) Bill, remain in limbo as the standoff between the treasury and Opposition benches over electoral transparency and democratic processes continues.
