Rouse Avenue Court on Thursday provided relief to Bhartiya Janta Party MP Bansuri Swaraj in a revision plea filed by AAP leader Satyendar Jain in alleged defamatory statements against him in an interview.

Special Judge Jitendra Singh upheld the trial court’s judgment, stating no prima facie evidence against Swaraj to proceed under criminal defamation provisions.

Earlier, Jain had filed a petition alleging that Swaraj, called him corrupt to tarnish his public image in a television interview on October 5, 2023.

She falsely claimed that currency notes worth Rs 3 crore, 1.3 kg of gold and 133 gold coins recovered from his house, Jain said in the petition.

Satyendar Jain moved to the Rouse Avenue court after a magisterial court refused to take criminal cognisance of Jain’s petition.

The court noted that Swaraj merely reiterated an Enforcement Directorate (ED) tweet from June 6, 2022.

While granting relief to Swaraj, the court made a strong observation about the conduct of investigative agencies, particularly the ED. It cautioned that the information dissemination by such agencies must be accurate, non-misleading and free from sensationalism.
