The Awami League has strongly criticised the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus for what it calls a ‘reckless and disgraceful’ move to alter structures at Ganabhaban, the official residence of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The incident has sparked political outrage during a sensitive transition period.
The ruling party accused the interim setup of exceeding its authority by initiating structural changes at a site of national and symbolic significance.
In an official statement on Monday, the Awami League expressed deep concern over the reported plan to construct a ‘so-called mass graveyard’ within the Ganabhaban premises.
It described the move as a politically motivated attempt by what it termed ‘an illegal, fascist usurper’ and his group.
The statement stated, “It appears this illegal occupying group fails to understand that Ganabhaban is not Sheikh Hasina’s private residence. It is the official residence of the head of government of Bangladesh and was designed in harmony with the architectural plan of the National Parliament complex. The iconic American architect Louis I. Kahn designed the Parliament building and its surrounding structures. It is considered one of the finest architectural works in the world — a reflection of Bangladesh’s heritage and culture.”
“Altering this structure means attempting to distort our national heritage and cultural identity. Therefore, we strongly condemn and protest any fundamental changes to the architecture of the National Parliament building, Ganabhaban, or any of its associated structures,” the party added.
Ganabhaban Compared to Iconic Global Residences
Drawing comparisons to the White House and 10 Downing Street, the Awami League reiterated that Ganabhaban serves as the Prime Minister’s official residence, not a personal home.
The party also criticised what it sees as the interim government’s hostility toward Sheikh Hasina, accusing the administration of neglecting the ecological and historical value of the Ganabhaban grounds.
Referring to the government’s handling of recent events, including the Milestone tragedy, the party accused Yunus of inconsistency, claiming he sought public help during a crisis only to misuse public funds shortly after.
Condemning the move as a ‘vile, politically motivated act’, the Awami League concluded, “Just days ago, after failing to manage the aftermath of the Milestone tragedy, the fascist-murderer Yunus took to Facebook to beg the people for help. And yet, today, he is shamefully spending taxpayers’ money on such hateful and unnecessary projects. To this violent extremist clique, establishing their hatred takes precedence over saving lives. On behalf of the Bangladesh Awami League, we vehemently denounce and protest this vile, politically motivated act.”
