Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his address at the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, announced India’s strategic vision for its upcoming BRICS Chairmanship in 2026, rooted in a ‘people-centric’ and ‘humanity-first’ approach.
His address focused on global health, climate change, and sustainable development, which he identified as the foundation for BRICS’ evolving role on the world stage.
Speaking at the session on the Environment, COP-30, and Global Health, PM Modi reaffirmed India’s long-standing commitment to climate justice, calling it a moral responsibility rather than a political choice.
“For us, it is not just about energy, it is about maintaining a balance between life and nature,” he said.
He praised the BRICS platform for prioritising environmental action and underscored India’s efforts in championing initiatives such as the International Solar Alliance, Mission LiFE, and the Global Biofuels Alliance.
Reimagining BRICS
India is set to take over the BRICS Chair in 2026. PM Modi shared a refreshed vision for the group, proposing a redefinition of BRICS as Building Resilience and Innovation for Cooperation and Sustainability.
He pledged to advance the interests of the Global South and promote inclusive growth, drawing on India’s G20 presidency experience.
The Prime Minister thanked Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva for hosting a successful summit and for convening discussions on pressing global challenges.
“India will continue to lead BRICS with a vision of inclusivity and shared prosperity,” he added.
PM Modi highlighted India’s pioneering work in healthcare, referencing the Ayushman Bharat scheme—the world’s largest health insurance programme—and digital health platforms reaching remote populations.
He expressed India’s readiness to share its experience with BRICS nations, particularly in the Global South.
He welcomed the BRICS Partnership for Elimination of Socially Determined Diseases and noted the importance of the BRICS Vaccine R&D Centre launched in 2022.
Citing India’s sustainable development trajectory, PM Modi reiterated the need for technology transfer and affordable climate financing for developing nations.
He applauded the adoption of the Framework Declaration on Climate Finance as a major milestone.
Concluding his speech, PM Modi said, “Just as we brought the voice of the Global South to the forefront during our G20 presidency, we will lead BRICS with the same spirit of ‘Humanity First’.”
India’s chairmanship in 2026 promises to steer BRICS towards a more inclusive, responsible, and sustainable future.
