Prof Shahid Akhtar Stresses Empowering Minority Education Under Article 30 At Mumbai Workshop

A key workshop hosted by Anjuman-I-Islam in Mumbai highlighted the constitutional safeguards of Article 30.

In a significant initiative to promote minority education, Anjuman-I-Islam hosted a high-level workshop at the Saif Tayyabji Auditorium in Mumbai, focusing on the implementation of Article 30 of the Indian Constitution.

The event brought together stakeholders from across Maharashtra and India to discuss constitutional safeguards for minority educational institutions.

The workshop featured Prof Shahid Akhtar, Acting Chairman of the National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions (NCMEI), who stressed the urgency of removing obstacles in the practical application of Article 30.

“It is imperative to sensitise stakeholders and operationalise Article 30 to protect minority educational rights,” he stated, advocating for continuous engagement through workshops and training.

Padma Awardee Dr Zahir I Kazi, President of Anjuman-I-Islam, presided over the session, while Ms Anchal Goyal (IAS), District Magistrate of Mumbai, served as the chief guest.

Their presence underscored the importance of synergy between civil society and administrative leadership in advancing inclusive education.

Organised under the aegis of the Minority Commission, the workshop adopted a comprehensive 360-degree format involving more than 400 representatives from minority-run educational institutions, NCMEI members, and state officials.

Topics discussed included institutional accreditation, recognition challenges, and access to resources for minority communities.

A strategic roadmap was developed during the workshop to identify and address policy-level challenges and bridge gaps between legal entitlement and ground reality.

Institutional commitment & future prospects

Prof Akhtar highlighted NCMEI’s commitment to supporting minority educational institutions through capacity building and policy advocacy.

He called for collaborative governance, involving both the state and civil society, to ensure Article 30 translates into tangible outcomes for minority communities.

Dr Kazi commended the initiative, calling it ‘a defining moment for equitable access to education’ and reaffirmed Anjuman-I-Islam’s dedication to inclusive nation-building through education.

The workshop marked a progressive step in reinforcing constitutional guarantees and setting a precedent for proactive engagement with minority institutions.

It not only strengthened the discourse on Article 30 but also set in motion actionable measures for fostering educational equity across India.
