PM Narendra Modi, during a historic address at the Parliament of Ghana, declared that a strong India would contribute significantly to a more stable and prosperous world.
Reaffirming India’s commitment to the development of Africa, PM Modi positioned India as a pillar of strength for both the Global South and the broader global community during times of complex crises.
PM Modi reaffirms support for Africa’s development
PM Modi emphasised that India remains a committed partner in Africa’s development journey. “Africa’s goals are our priority. Our approach is to grow together as equals,” he said.
He highlighted that India’s development partnership is demand-driven, focused on local empowerment, capacity building, and the creation of self-sustaining ecosystems.
Prime Minister Modi assured Ghanaian lawmakers that India fully supports Africa’s Agenda 2063, aimed at securing a sustainable and prosperous future for the continent.
Call for reform in global governance
PM Modi noted the urgent need to give a voice to the Global South and called for reforms in global governance systems.
“The world order created after the Second World War is changing fast,” he said, citing technological revolutions, demographic shifts, and the growing influence of the Global South as catalysts for this change.
Honour bestowed: PM Modi receives Ghana’s highest civilian award
Earlier in the day, Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama conferred upon PM Modi the prestigious Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana, recognising his statesmanship and global leadership.
The award marked Modi’s 24th international recognition from a foreign country.
Accepting the honour on behalf of 1.4 billion Indians, PM Modi dedicated it to India’s youth, diversity, and enduring ties with Ghana.
Shared democratic values and historical ties
In his speech, PM Modi celebrated the deep democratic traditions of both India and Ghana.
“Democracy is not merely a system for us; it is part of our fundamental values,” he said.
He also acknowledged the shared colonial past and the resilience that both nations displayed in their journey to independence.
“Our relationship knows no bounds,” he remarked, reinforcing the historical and cultural ties binding the two nations.
Bilateral Talks: Towards a Comprehensive Partnership
PM Modi and President Mahama held wide-ranging discussions, agreeing to elevate India-Ghana relations to a Comprehensive Partnership. Both sides expressed interest in expanding cooperation across trade, agriculture, digital technology, infrastructure, defence, and people-to-people exchanges.
India offered to share expertise in areas like healthcare, pharmaceuticals, digital infrastructure (including UPI), and skill development.
Key agreements signed to deepen ties
During the visit, India and Ghana signed four Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs):
- Cultural Exchange Programme (CEP)
- MoU between the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA)
- MoU between the Institute of Traditional & Alternative Medicine (ITAM), Ghana and the Institute of Teaching and Research in Ayurveda (ITRA), India
- MoU on Joint Commission Meetings to institutionalise bilateral cooperation
