Iron Ore

India’s iron ore production rose by 0.6%, reaching 53 million metric tons (mmt) during April-May compared to 52.7 mmt last year.

The Ministry of Mines reported total iron ore output for FY25 at 289 mmt, reflecting steady mining activity.

Manganese ore production also grew by 1.4%, touching 0.70 mmt against 0.69 mmt during the same period last year.

Bauxite production showed a slight growth of 0.9%, reaching 4.73 mmt compared to 4.69 mmt in the previous year.

Zinc concentrate production rose by 3.7%, registering 0.29 mmt during April-May, indicating healthy demand from industrial sectors.

Limestone output increased by 1.6%, reaching 81.40 mmt, highlighting continued demand in the construction and infrastructure sectors.

In the non-ferrous segment, primary aluminium production rose by 1.3%, touching 7.07 lakh tonnes compared to 6.98 lakh tonnes last year.

Copper production recorded a significant jump of 43.5%, reaching 0.99 lakh tonnes compared to 0.69 lakh tonnes previously.

This sharp rise in copper output reflects improved operational capacity and higher demand in key manufacturing sectors.

The mining sector continues to show resilience despite global economic challenges and fluctuating commodity prices in international markets.

Government data suggests steady domestic consumption growth, especially in infrastructure, automotive, and renewable energy sectors, driving metal demand.

Experts believe rising industrial activity and ongoing infrastructure projects will sustain demand for iron ore and non-ferrous metals.

The Ministry of Mines aims to further boost mineral production through policy reforms, exploration incentives, and sustainable mining practices.

Higher output in metals like copper, aluminium, and zinc supports India’s push towards self-reliance in critical raw materials.

The production growth highlights India’s efforts to strengthen its mining sector, ensuring a stable supply chain for key industries.
