Iran Airspace: As geopolitical tensions rise in the Middle East, major Indian airlines Air India and IndiGo have issued passenger advisories due to the closure of Iranian airspace.
On Saturday, Air India confirmed it had rerouted several of its international services, citing safety concerns and unexpected airspace restrictions.
The national carrier issued an official statement on social media platform X: “Due to the emerging situation in Iran and parts of the Middle East, the subsequent closure of airspace, and in view of the safety of our passengers, some of our flights are operating on alternative extended routes. We are doing our best to minimise any inconvenience caused.”

Passengers advised to expect delays
The rerouting impacts multiple key international routes, especially those connecting India with Europe and North America.
These typically pass through Iranian skies, and their diversion has led to delays ranging from 30 minutes to several hours.
IndiGo, India’s largest domestic airline, also cautioned travellers via an official advisory. “Airspace over Iran and surrounding areas continues to be unavailable. Certain flight paths may need adjustments, leading to extended travel durations or delays,” the airline noted.

Travellers are urged to check their flight status regularly via the respective airline websites or mobile apps and to remain in contact with customer service for assistance.
IndiGo has confirmed that its support teams are actively managing affected bookings.
The advisories follow Iran’s recent missile retaliation in response to Israeli airstrikes, raising alarms across the aviation sector.
Several global aviation authorities have already issued NOTAMs (Notices to Airmen), cautioning airlines against flying over the affected airspace.
Both Air India and IndiGo have reiterated that passenger safety is paramount.
While the rerouting ensures safety, it adds logistical challenges and operational delays for international flights transiting via the Middle East.
Experts warn that the disruption may continue for days, if not weeks, depending on diplomatic developments.
Meanwhile, airlines are actively evaluating alternative air corridors through Central Asia and the Arabian Peninsula.
Passengers flying to destinations in Europe, the Gulf, and North America are advised to remain flexible, allow extra time for travel, and stay informed through official channels as airlines work to adapt in real time to the evolving security landscape.
