UP witnessed a significant rise in tractor ownership, with the number of tractors increasing by over 62% from 88,000 to 1,42,200.

Tractor Ownership In Uttar Pradesh Surges Over 62%

UP witnessed a significant rise in tractor ownership, with the number of tractors increasing by over 62%—from 88,000 in 2016–17 to 1,42,200 in 2024–25, the state government announced on Wednesday.

A government spokesperson attributed this sharp rise to the steady increase in farmers’ incomes.

“Farmers no longer use tractors just for ploughing,” the spokesperson explained.

“Today, they play a vital role in land levelling, fertiliser and pesticide spraying with power sprayers, bund making, seed sowing using drills, and even potato planting and digging. Tractors are also key in managing crop residues”, he added.

UP Government Offers Nearly 50% Subsidy On Equipment

The Uttar Pradesh government currently offers almost 50% subsidy on farming equipment powered by tractors.

These tools help farmers cut down on labour costs and increase efficiency in essential tasks such as land preparation, sowing, harvesting, and threshing.

Officials expect these incentives to further boost both tractor ownership and farmers’ incomes in the coming years.

India Set For Record Tractor Sales Nationwide

This upward trend in tractor sales is visible at the national level too.

Data shows that India may see record-breaking sales of 10 lakh tractors in FY 2024–25, surpassing the previous record of 939,713 tractors sold in FY 2023–24.

UP CM Yogi Reaffirms Commitment To Farmers

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has repeatedly stressed that supporting farmers remains a top priority for his government.

Highlighting the state’s agricultural strengths from nine agro-climatic zones and fertile lands of the Indo-Gangetic belt to abundant water and labour, he envisions Uttar Pradesh as the future ‘food basket of the country’.

The government is promoting modern farming through Krishi Vigyan Kendras and the Million Farmers’ School.

These platforms educate farmers and encourage them to adopt innovative practices and technologies.

Irrigation Projects And MSP Strengthen Agricultural System

Uttar Pradesh has completed key irrigation projects, boosting its irrigation capacity.

In parallel, the government has ensured transparent procurement processes for wheat and paddy at the Minimum Support Price (MSP), timely payments, and the inclusion of more crops, especially millets, under MSP.
