As the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) marked its ninth anniversary on May 1, Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri highlighted the scheme’s transformative impact on millions of underprivileged families across India.
Over 238 Crore Cylinder Refills Reflect PM Ujjwala Yojana’s Success
Taking to the social media platform on Monday, Minister Puri shared key statistics about the scheme.
“India’s energy future is being shaped by innovation, entrepreneurship & self-sufficiency,” Puri posted on X.
The post further added, “Under PM @narendramodi ji’s vision, our six Oil Marketing Companies have invested Rs 290 crore to support 303 start-ups in biofuels, AI, clean tech & more -fuelling sustainable growth & job creation.”

He emphasised the significance of over 238 crore LPG cylinder refills in the last nine years, calling it a strong indicator of the scheme’s success in ensuring sustained access to clean cooking fuel.
Ujjwala Empowering Women And Improving Health
Puri credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership for making PMUY a ‘shining example of women’s empowerment’ and a health booster for homemakers across the country.
The scheme provides deposit-free LPG connections to adult women from poor households, aiming to eliminate the use of harmful traditional fuels like wood and coal for cooking.
Expansion Of LPG Infrastructure
To support the growing demand, the government has added 11,670 new LPG distributors in the past decade, enabling cylinder delivery even in remote and challenging terrains.
This expansion has played a crucial role in bridging the urban-rural fuel divide and ensuring last-mile connectivity.
Ujjwala 2.0 Expands Reach Further
As of March 1, 2025, 10.33 crore households have been covered under the PMUY scheme. To extend benefits to more poor families, the Centre launched Ujjwala 2.0 in August 2021 to add 1 crore new connections.
By January 2022, the government met the target and released an additional 60 lakh connections by December 2022, bringing the total under Ujjwala 2.0 to 1.60 crore.
India’s Active LPG Consumer Base Nears 33 Crore
India’s active LPG consumer base has reached 32.94 crore, including 10.33 crore PMUY beneficiaries.
The government continues to work toward its vision of providing clean and affordable energy access to every household, especially in rural and underserved areas.
