The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly convened a special day-long session on Monday, beginning with a two-minute silence in honour of the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack.
The tribute was observed before the House took up discussions aimed at condemning the heinous assault that left 26 civilians dead.
Resolution Condemning The Attack
Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary tabled a resolution expressing the Assembly’s collective grief and outrage over the tragedy that occurred on 22nd April in Baisaran meadow, Pahalgam.
The resolution stated, “The House expresses its profound shock and anguish at the barbaric and inhuman attack on innocent civilians and unequivocally condemns the heinous, cowardly act that resulted in the loss of innocent lives.”
It further emphasised that such acts strike at the very heart of Kashmiriyat, the spirit of unity, peace, and harmony that defines both Jammu and Kashmir and the broader Indian nation.
Opposition Demands Swift Justice
During the session, opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislators called for strong action and demanded swift justice for the terrorists and their backers.
Emotions ran high as members decried the involvement of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militants, supported by Pakistan, in orchestrating the attack that killed 26 tourists.
The attack in Pahalgam sparked nationwide outrage.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi reacted firmly to the killings and vowed to pursue the perpetrators, their handlers, and sponsors relentlessly.
In his words, they would be ‘hunted down to the ends of the earth’.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha also moved swiftly, conducting a high-level security review meeting with Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi in Srinagar.
The L-G directed the security forces to use all necessary measures to bring the attackers to justice.
Demolition Of Terrorists’ Properties
In a strong message to terrorists and their sympathisers, the security forces continued their campaign to demolish properties belonging to militants involved in the attack.
Security forces demolished two houses owned by Adil Hussain Thokar and Asif Sheikh, both linked to the LeT and involved in the Pahalgam killings, in Tral and Bijbehara, respectively.
The Assembly’s proceedings reflected a unified political front against terrorism, reaffirming Jammu and Kashmir’s resilience in the face of such acts.
The Centre and the state government have pledged decisive action and will intensify the crackdown on terrorist networks and their infrastructure in the coming days.
