Stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra, facing multiple criminal cases over his ‘traitor’ jibe at Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, filed a petition in the Madras High Court on Friday for transit anticipatory bail.
Kamra’s legal team mentioned the plea for an urgent hearing before Justice Sunder Mohan, who assured that he would examine the matter later in the day.
On Monday, Mumbai’s MIDC police station registered a Zero FIR against Kamra for an allegedly objectionable joke during a stand-up comedy show.
Meanwhile, Khar Police booked Yuva Sena general secretary Rahool Kanal under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Maharashtra Police Act.
The police also detained 20 Shiv Sena activists involved in vandalizing the Unicontinental Hotel, where Kamra’s comedy show was recorded.
Shiv Sena Condemns Kamra’s Remarks
Shiv Sena strongly criticized Kamra’s parody song, which targeted Eknath Shinde during his performance at the Habitat Comedy Club in Mumbai. The party labeled the remarks as distasteful and defamatory.
The Mumbai Police booked Kamra under Section 356(2) (defamation) of BNS and issued two summons, but he has yet to appear for questioning.
Privilege Notice Against Kamra
On Thursday, the Maharashtra Legislative Council accepted a privilege notice against Kamra and forwarded it to the Privileges Committee.
Council Chairman Ram Shinde confirmed that the committee, led by Prasad Lad, would decide the next course of action regarding the breach of privilege motion.
