Delhi residents woke up to a blanket of dense fog on Wednesday morning, drastically reducing visibility across the city. At 7 am, the overall Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 333, classified as “very poor.” This marked a slight improvement from the previous day’s “severe” AQI level.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported a minimum temperature of nine degrees Celsius, adding to the chilly weather. The dense fog disrupted rail services, with 20 trains heading to Delhi from various parts of the country running late.

The foggy conditions also prompted the Delhi Airport to issue an advisory. The statement warned passengers that flights not compliant with CAT III landing procedures might face delays. Travelers were advised to stay updated by contacting their airlines directly.
By 4 pm on December 24, the AQI in Delhi had dropped to 369, reflecting an improvement in air quality. However, Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data showed AQI levels in key areas like Anand Vihar (366), Alipur (324), and Ashok Vihar (373) remained in the “very poor” category as of 5 a.m. on December 25.
Authorities Respond to Pollution Levels
Earlier this month, Stage IV restrictions under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) were implemented after AQI levels exceeded 400, indicating severe air quality. On December 24, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) lifted Stage IV measures as conditions improved, although restrictions under Stages I, II, and III remain in place to curb further deterioration.
The CPCB warns that “very poor” AQI levels pose serious health risks, particularly for vulnerable groups, such as children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions. Authorities have urged the public to adhere to guidelines to minimize pollution and protect health.
As winter deepens, Delhi’s air quality and weather conditions will remain under close monitoring. Authorities continue to emphasize public cooperation to sustain recent improvements and prevent further spikes in pollution levels. Mixed weather patterns are expected in the days ahead, adding to the challenges of maintaining air quality.
