The Yogi government’s push to modernize the Prayagraj Mahakumbh is inspiring the 13 Akharas to adopt digital tools for better management and transparency. These historic institutions are creating databases to streamline operations while preserving their religious traditions.
Akharas Implement Digital Tools for Improved Management
The Akharas are using digital technologies for record-keeping and management. Mahant Jamuna Puri, Secretary of Shri Panchayati Akhara Maha Nirvana, explained how combining traditional ledgers with computers has simplified audits. “The database helps maintain records for income tax filings, which are then shared with our chartered accountant,” he said.
Someshwaranand Brahmachari, General Secretary of Shri Panch Agni Akhara, highlighted the benefits of this transition. “Previously, Mahakumbh audits were done manually. Now, with technology, we gather data efficiently. Our akhara runs Sanskrit schools, and the database helps track everything, from student numbers to finances.”
Akharas to Aid Global and Social Campaigns
The databases will also support the Akharas’ global campaigns. Acharya Mahamandaleshwar Arun Giri Ji of Awahan Akhara emphasized that, apart from religious work, Akharas are involved in global initiatives. One such campaign is a global tree-planting project for environmental protection. Giri Ji is creating a database to support this initiative, making it more efficient and transparent.
Strengthening Ties with Deprived Communities
The new digital records will strengthen Sanatan Dharma’s outreach, particularly with tribal and deprived communities. Swami Pranavanand Saraswati Ji of Shri Panchayati Akhara Maha Nirvani discussed his efforts to connect these communities with Sanatan Dharma traditions. “Collecting their data is necessary to strengthen the roots of Sanatan Dharma,” he said.
Vaishnav Akharas to Follow Suit
Vaishnav akharas are also planning to create their own databases, despite some technical delays. Shri Mahant Ram Ji Das of All India Shri Panch Nirmohi Ani Akhara explained that Vaishnav akharas do not operate trusts and, therefore, don’t require audits. However, in today’s digital era, he acknowledges that they must establish databases to keep pace with modern developments.
This digital shift marks a significant move toward modernizing the spiritual institutions while maintaining their traditional essence.
