The Supreme Court will hear the Punjab government’s petition in January against the regular bail granted to Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia. The Punjab and Haryana High Court had granted Majithia bail in a drugs case involving serious allegations.
The case dates back to 2013 when a Rs 600 crore drug racket was exposed. During interrogation, the main accused allegedly named Majithia. He faces accusations of taking funds from drug smugglers for elections and facilitating settlements between smugglers.
High Court Grants Bail in Drugs Case
Majithia sought bail in May 2023 in connection with the case registered under the NDPS Act in December 2021. The High Court granted him regular bail, a decision now being challenged by the Punjab government.
Majithia belongs to a politically influential family. He is the brother-in-law of Shiromani Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Singh Badal and brother of former Union Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal.
Bikram Majithia’s Political Journey
Notably, the controversial Akali leader won his first election in 2007 from the Majithia constituency. He retained his seat in the 2012 and 2017 assembly elections. The Bikram Majithia drugs case continues to be a significant issue in Punjab politics, given the severity of the allegations and the political stature of the accused.
Moreover, the Supreme Court’s decision in January will be crucial in determining the next steps in this high-profile case.
