Eighty associations have joined forces to form ‘Abhaya Manch’ in protest over the alleged rape and murder of a junior doctor from RG Kar Medical College & Hospital. The doctors named the victim “Abhaya” in her memory. On August 9, her body was found in suspicious circumstances in the hospital’s seminar hall. Due to privacy laws, her real identity remains protected.
The platform includes junior doctors, civil society members, celebrities, and local supporters. The West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Front (WBJDF) continues to lead the protests. Although they paused their hunger strike, the WBJDF has vowed to keep pushing for justice.

West Bengal Launches ‘Abhaya Plus’ Self-Defense Program
West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose announced a self-defense program for girls called ‘Abhaya Plus.’ This initiative came in response to the doctor’s tragic death. Raj Bhavan insiders say the Governor personally created this program. He had previously criticized the police’s initial probe, which the Calcutta High Court later assigned to the CBI.
Protesters Demand Swift CBI Investigation
Abhaya Manch’s slogan, “Droher Alo Jwalo” (Light up the Lamp of Protests), reflects their commitment to justice. Protesters demand a quick, transparent conclusion from the CBI. The group insists only a thorough probe can ensure justice and safety for doctors in the state.
