TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee injured his hand on Tuesday during a heated exchange at a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) meeting on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill. The incident occurred after Banerjee smashed a glass in frustration during an argument with BJP MP Abhijit Gangopadhyay.
Suspension Follows Voting
Following the incident, JPC Chairman Jagdambika Pal suspended Banerjee from the next meeting, citing unruly behavior. The suspension was decided by a vote, with 9 out of JPC members favoring disciplinary action, while 8 opposed it. Banerjee’s outburst occurred while the committee was hearing the views of retired judges and advocates on the Waqf Bill, with opposition members questioning their involvement.
Previous Altercations and Accusations
Banerjee had previously clashed with BJP MPs Nishikant Dubey, Dilip Saikia, and Abhijit Gangopadhyay, leading to opposition members walking out of the meeting. They accused BJP MPs of using offensive language and criticized JPC Chairman Jagdambika Pal for not taking action. In contrast, BJP MP Tejashwi Surya wrote to the Lok Sabha Speaker, alleging opposition members threatened the JPC Chairperson and tore documents during the meeting.
The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, introduced by the Centre on July 28, was sent to the JPC on August 8 following strong objections from the opposition.
