Ladakhi climate activist Sonam Wangchuk has withdrawn his petition from the Delhi High Court. He had earlier sought permission for a peaceful hunger strike at Jantar Mantar, along with demanding the inclusion of Ladakh in the Sixth Schedule.
Protest Ends, Petition Withdrawn
During the hearing, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the court that Wangchuk had called off his protest. Consequently, the petition for the hunger strike was withdrawn. Wangchuk and others had initially filed the petition after Delhi Police refused permission for the protest, citing issues in the application, such as unclear start and end dates.
Accusations Against Government
Wangchuk accused the central government of failing to arrange a promised meeting. He added that he sought a venue for a peaceful hunger strike but was denied. Ultimately, he had no option but to continue the strike at Ladakh Bhawan. Wangchuk emphasized that he does not seek external support but welcomes those aware of Ladakh’s rights and the ongoing issues in the region.
