Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar dismissed allegations of tampering with Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) during a press conference on Tuesday. He urged exit poll agencies to reconsider their sample sizes to avoid misleading expectations.
Call for Self-Regulation in Exit Polls
Kumar emphasized that recent exit polls have created distorted expectations, leading to public frustration. He criticized certain TV channels for airing incorrect trends to match their exit poll findings. “The gap between expectation and reality can lead to frustration,” he said.
Commitment to Transparency and Accountability
In response to complaints from 20 candidates regarding EVM malfunctions, the CEC promised detailed replies addressing their concerns. He refuted claims that EVMs could be tampered with, explaining that batteries are sealed during commissioning and monitored during mock polls. Kumar reassured the public about the integrity of the voting process, emphasizing that EVMs have a single-use battery designed for extended use.
