The newly launched PM Internship Scheme has witnessed an overwhelming response, with over 1,55,000 candidates registering within the first day, according to government sources.
The registration commenced on Saturday and has opened doors to approximately 80,000 internship positions across 24 different sectors.
Announced during the Union Budget 2024 by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, this ambitious scheme aims to provide opportunities for around 10 million young individuals over the next five years.
By facilitating connections between young job seekers and companies in search of talent, the initiative seeks to tackle the pressing issue of youth unemployment.
Major corporate entities such as Jubilant Foodworks, Maruti Suzuki, Larsen and Toubro, Muthoot Finance, and Reliance Industries are among the 193 companies that have listed internship opportunities on the platform.
The available internships span a wide array of sectors, covering fields like operations management, production, maintenance, and sales.
The scheme’s reach extends to industries such as oil, gas, energy, travel and hospitality, automotive, and banking, underscoring a collaborative effort to enhance the employability of youth across various sectors.
Aadhaar-Enabled System To Create 120,000 Internships Nationwide
Utilizing an Aadhaar-based registration system, the portal provides efficient access to internships while offering features for bio-data generation, simplifying the application process.
This year, the initiative plans to create over 1,20,000 internships across 737 districts in 37 states and union territories.
Top companies involved in the scheme are also focused on bridging skill gaps, making significant contributions to youth employment.
The Ministry of Corporate Affairs, which oversees the scheme, describes it as a transformative effort aimed at aligning youth skills with market needs.
Selected candidates will gain the opportunity to intern with some of India’s leading companies for a year, earning a monthly stipend of Rs 5,000, alongside a one-time grant of Rs 6,000.
Of this stipend, Rs 500 will be provided by the companies through their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, while the government will contribute Rs 4,500.
Eligibility criteria for this program include individuals who have completed high school, earned ITI certificates, obtained diplomas from polytechnic institutes, or are graduates with degrees such as BA, B Sc, B Com, BCA, BBA, or B Pharma.
