The Supreme Court of India, led by the Chief Justice of India (CJI), is set to hear petitions challenging the Allahabad High Court’s decision to cancel the list of candidates selected for the Uttar Pradesh Assistant Teacher Recruitment 2019. The hearing is scheduled for October 15.
In a prior session, the Supreme Court issued a stay on the High Court’s decision, which mandated the preparation of a new selection list within three months. All parties involved have been directed to submit written arguments ahead of the upcoming hearing.

The High Court’s ruling raised concerns for thousands of current assistant teachers, as it stated that if the new list adversely affected any existing teacher, provisions should be made to ensure their continued employment to prevent disruption in students’ education. This decision could potentially displace many teachers who have served for the last four years.
The controversy traces back to the results of the assistant teacher recruitment examination released on June 1, 2020, by the Basic Education Department. During the previous Samajwadi Party administration, approximately 137,000 Shiksha Mitras were converted into assistant teacher positions, which later faced legal challenges. The Supreme Court ultimately annulled these adjustments and ordered the Yogi Adityanath government to conduct a re-examination for the positions, directing the filling of posts in two phases. The Yogi government subsequently issued vacancies for 68,500 posts in 2018, followed by the recruitment of 69,000 assistant teachers in a second phase.
As the Supreme Court prepares to review the case, the implications for teachers and students across Uttar Pradesh remain a pressing concern.
