Chirag Paswan Targets Mamata over Kolkata Rape case

Accusing Mamata Banerjee of politicizing the issue, Union Minister Chirag Paswan has criticized the CM for her ‘silence’ on brutal rape of a trainee doctor in Kolkata.

Additionally, Paswan expressed surprise that such a grave incident occurred under a woman chief minister’s watch. He noted, “I am astonished that an incident of this nature happens in a state led by a woman Chief Minister, and it is met with silence from her and women MPs. This situation is both reprehensible and shameful.”

The controversy intensified after Mamata Banerjee suggested that opposition parties, including the CPI(M) and BJP, were behind the ransacking of the emergency room at RG Kar. She claimed that these parties were conspiring to create unrest in the state.

Paswan responded by emphasizing that such incidents are unacceptable in any civil society. He also expressed concerns about the politicization of the issue. “The arrival of thousands of anti-social elements late Wednesday night, their vandalism, and the potential destruction of evidence raise serious questions. Was this part of a conspiracy to protect someone or implicate others? A thorough investigation is essential.”

The unrest began early Wednesday morning when a large mob stormed the RG Kar Hospital campus, causing significant damage to vehicles and public property. The security forces had to intervene to disperse the crowd of approximately 7,000 people.

Doctors at RG Kar were protesting the August 9 rape and murder of a post-graduate trainee doctor in the hospital’s seminar hall. The incident has sparked nationwide protests from doctors and the broader medical community, demanding justice and better safety measures.

Chirag Paswan also highlighted broader concern over political responses to critical issues, as he concluded.
