The Delhi High Court has declined to hear the Delhi Police’s petition seeking a stay on the order transferring the investigation into the death of Faizan to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Faizan, who was allegedly compelled to sing the national anthem during the Delhi Riots in 2020, died under contentious circumstances. Although the Delhi Police requested a stay on the CBI investigation, the High Court extended the transfer period from 7 to 14 days. This decision was rendered by Justice Anup Jairam Bhambhani.
Court Orders CBI Inquiry
Just one day prior, the Delhi High Court had mandated a CBI inquiry following a petition by Faizan’s mother. She had sought a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into her son’s death. Faizan was 23 years old at the time of his passing.

Allegations by Faizan’s Mother
Faizan’s mother alleged that the Delhi Police had illegally detained her son and denied him medical care, leading to his death on February 26, 2020. Faizan died at the city’s GTB Hospital within 24 hours of being released from Jyoti Nagar police station.
In her petition, Faizan’s mother, Kismatun, asserted that her son’s death was a result of a hate crime and custodial murder, claiming he was targeted due to his religion. A video circulated on social media purportedly showed Faizan and four other Muslim men being beaten and forced to sing the national anthem and “Vande Mataram” by police officers.
